Tips for Writing a Blog Post

As apart of my WRI340 class, we had to create a series of blog posts during the semester. These posts had to be approximately 400 words, incorporate multimodal media, and need a creative risk (either as a writer or composer). From my experience, I have a few tips and tricks for anyone who wishes to create a series of blog posts and what to have in them.

1. Make Bold, Simple Statements

No one likes a boring blog post with a bunch of text. To avoid putting your audience to sleep, make statement 'headlines' that are bigger in font and have a different color.  Throughout my posts, I used these statements a lot. This will make the posts easier to read, while also giving your blog more of a 'pop' to it.

2. Break Things Up in the Post

To avoid the blog post looking like an essay, try to break up the text with multiple paragraphs or with images. As I went along in my own posts, I used this technique more. Sometimes, pictures can explain your message  better than words.

3. Blog Posts are Perfect for Taking Risks

I firmly stand by this one: why not take a risk in your writing through a blog post? Seriously, it's one of the more informal ways of writing and blogs are meant for you to be honest with your audience. So, don't be afraid to try something new with your writing. In my own blog post, I took a risk by creating a post to resemble an email to Wake Forest University concerning AI usage.

4. Be Honest with Your Audience

No one likes a liar, especially if you are the author trying to gain a rapport with your readers. Blog posts are meant for your audience to get close to you and vice versa. They are a great way for you to break down the wall between author and audience and to be less formal. It is okay and normal to be vulnerable with your audience, but try not to overshare too much to the point where the information becomes irrelevant.

5. Have fun with it!

Whether it's your first time or not writing a blog, don't forget to have fun writing it. A huge part of writing is looking back and learning from the past projects you have written. Writing is a fun, exciting journey. I know I had fun creating my Make-Do Post of a limerick about science. So buckle up, put on a creative mind, and have the best time writing!
