Make-Do Challenge
Ever wonder what a certain character’s Hinge profile would look like? Well, I wondered too! Let’s see who Joey from Friends would match with on Hinge…
If there’s one thing you should know about me, I am a Friends fan! Although it aired when I was young, I did not start watching the series until around high-school and college. I fell in love with the jokes, the characters, and the unbreakable bond the cast had for each other. Whenever I felt sad or needed to take a break from studying, I immediately turned on Friends. Something about it gave me a warm, happy feeling on the inside.

What Did the Proccess Look Like?
Because of my group’s and I interest in Friends, we decided to do a Hinge Profile on Joey. We saw Joey to be the most fitting character with his famous ‘How you doin’?’ line. We decided to gather a few pictures from the internet with either Joey by himself or laughing with other characters. Afterward, our focus was to find a few quotes from the TV show that were well-known, love-focused.
Next, we decided to compile the Hinge profile. Thankfully, a few of my group members were familiar with the app and were in charge of putting everything together. One of the challenges was finding all the correct information on Joey like weight, height, occupation, etc. Luckily, our search was successful and we found all the right data. When everything was compiled together, we chose to screen record the profile.
In addition, we wanted to do a potential ‘match’ for Joey. Thus, we decided to do a profile on Janine, the Australian dancer from the show. Since we already knew what information we needed, the second profile came along faster.
What Did I Learn?
From the above process, I learned how to remix a Hinge profile with a TV show character. In doing so, I became more familiar with Hinge and with how remixing works. By working with an app as our source of medium, I realize why the app seems to attract an audience. I thought the app itself gave a person an opportunity to share what they wanted with other people. However, dating-apps can be a bit tricky as some individuals will only share information that isn't true.
Reflecting back on the project, I wish we had more time to do a full remix project with different characters from Friends. I must admit, I was a bit nervous about this assignment due to my lack of video-editing skills but I would like to think I got better at it during this unit!

Andrea, it is so fun to read another group member's perspective on our project! Obviously, I agree on our choice to focus in on Joey after the project got reduced a bit! He is definitely more the type to be on a dating app, and the "How you doin?" line is iconic. It certainly was a challenge to find all this specific information about Joey, like height! One funny thing was that I just couldn't process the birthday, and kept insisting that we needed to put the original one from the 1970s -- not realizing that would make him much older than his pictures (a catfish!). I agree with what you learned about Hinge from the experience!…
I love what you and your group did for this Make/Do! The Friends cast seems like the perfect choice to create a Hinge profile for, since the plot is all about their changing love lives and interactions in daily life. It would be so interesting to see your perspectives on the other members of the cast and how they might portray themselves on social media. I feel like this project ties in so many of the topics we explored throughout the class, like online presence, multimedia usage, remixing, and even AI tools! Good work! -- Claire Bowden
